The South African Open Championship is the world's oldest national open golf tournament. In 1903 it was first played and is one of the main tournaments on the Sunshine Tour based in South Africa. This year once again the Dunhill Championship replaced the SA Open as the flagship event of the tour.

The tournament became part of the open qualifier series in December 2018 and allowed up to three non-exempt players to participate in the Open Championship.

The competition was held in the Johannesburg area from 2011 to February 2020, played two times at Serengeti Golf Club, five times at Glendower Golf Club, and then two times at the Land Park Golf Club. It will leave Johannesburg in December 2020 and will be held at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.

The most successful player in this tournament was Gary Player; between 1956 and 1981, he won 13 tournaments. Robby Locke has won 9 titles, Sid Brews has won 8 titles, and George Fotheringham has won 5 titles.
